Out of the blue

Just over a week ago, on Sunday the 11th, I had a second stroke. A smaller one, thank goodness. Blessedly, there is no further cognitive damage done. But my walking and general stamina have taken another hit. Walking stick is a loyal and valued friend, as is my bed, my computer, streamed TV and crochet.

And I feel impelled to share my poem, ‘Precious’, again. Perhaps resilience is an accumulation of quiet optimism, acceptance and gentle presence in every moment.

as long as
your legs work
keep dancing

as long as
your eyes work
read voraciously
memorise details of
beautiful faces
of those you love
and the grandeur
of nature
a falling leaf
a dewdrop
a spider’s web

while your mind
remains intact
avidly curious

while ever your
heart beats
savour life

for the lightning
will strike
between breaths

and the last
breath will
take you

by surprise

Have just returned from walking the dog on a newly discovered track which wends through a wild beauty which is Western Australia. All the while I was appreciating what I have now and what awaits me. I felt my musings mirrored in your poem and my feelings of loneliness were diminished. I wish you a speedy recovery from this latest setback. My thoughts and love are with you.
